Description

The Saint-Jean district was a large parish in the Middle Ages. Although no remains of the original building survive, its bell-tower porch dates partly from the 12th century and features two Romanesque capital carvings: the Woman with the Snakes and Tobias Catching the Fish.

After the Wars of Religion, the church was hastily rebuilt in the early 17th century. Damaged once again during the Revolutionary period, the main body of the building was reconstructed in the 1840s based on designs by the diocesan architect Alexandre Epailly.
The bell tower and porch were restored two decades later by the architect and public works engineer Auguste Chauffeur, who proposed completely cladding the facades, radically altering its architectural style and giving it a Neo-Romanesque design very different from the original.

The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was listed as a Historic Monument in 1978.
