Description

Claude-Pierre de Delay d'Agier died on August 4, 1827 in Bourg de Péage, and this tomb was erected. However, some claim that he was not buried here. Even today, the mystery remains...

This is the tomb of Claude-Pierre de Delay d'Agier.
Born in 1750, this agronomist of many political and philanthropic activities was the creator of these grounds.
For 20 long years, he patiently purchased parcel after parcel of land in what is now the Bois des Naix, in order to turn it into the pleasure estate he had always wanted. Originally, it consisted of meadows and vines.
In 1815, work began on the park: ditches were dug, walls were built, ponds were drained and thousands of different species of trees were planted. The majestic avenue of plane trees that can still be admired today is a vestige of this first garden.
