Description

Here we are on the Place du 8 Mai 1945, the date marking the German surrender that put an end to the Second World War.

This small square, etched in the memories of the people of Peage, was the scene of a particular event in local history.

Right here, on June 9, 1944, almost 750 men from the Commune, eager to work for the liberation of the country, gathered before joining the Vercors Maquis, under the noses of the occupying forces stationed in Romans.
Sadly, all these brave young men never returned. In their memory, a memorial was erected after the war by the Pionniers du Vercors association.
In 2011, the town, with the participation of local veterans' associations, decided to enhance this stele with a mural of remembrance, a condensed history of the modern conflicts in which France has been involved.
The fresco concludes with the European flag and the flight of a dove, symbols of peace and a reminder not to repeat the mistakes of history.
