Description

Tradition attributes the origins of the village of Jaillans to the legend of the "Jaille", a monstrous and bloodthirsty animal.

What to see:

L'église Sainte-Marie: Dating back to the 12th century, when it encompassed a Benedictine priory belonging to the Montmajour abbey, the church lies at the heart of a remarkably well-developed village. It has preserved some important Romanesque features, making it one of the most interesting churches in the region. At the head of the entrance ogive, two masks roughly carved from a shield symbolize Lord Roch and his wife Léocadie. The golden sword that was supposed to have destroyed the "Jaille" was kept in a shrine. The shrine was desecrated, but the culprit fell and was pierced by the stolen sword as he fled. The sword was recovered and handed over to the bishopric, but no one knows what happened to it. The skeleton of the "Jaille" is said to be buried beneath the main altar.
